  • Growth Conditions: Thrives in warm soil at least 15°C (60°F). Plant seeds 4 cm deep and 30 cm apart in rows 1 m apart. Prefers well-fertilized soil and requires frequent shallow cultivation due to surface-level roots.
  • Extended Sweetness: Reaches maturity in 75 days, with a remarkable ability to retain its sugar content longer than typical corn, making it perfect for preserving by freezing while retaining flavor.
  • Culinary Flexibility: Ideal for fresh consumption straight off the cob, grilling, or using in salads. Excellent for freezing, ensuring year-long availability for gourmet dishes.
  • Isolation Requirements: To maintain purity and optimal sweetness, ensure to plant this SH2 variety at least 30 meters away from other corn types to prevent cross-pollination.

Choosing a packet size

  • The 150-seed packet is ideal for home gardeners and small plots wanting a solid pollination block and one to two successions. Great for first-time SH2 growers focusing on peak sweetness for fresh eating and freezing.
  • The 500-seed packet suits larger backyards or community gardens planning multiple short rows or staggered sowings. It provides enough seed for steady harvests over several weeks.
  • The 2500-seed packet is a strong fit for small farms, market growers, or school gardens establishing multiple beds. Enables reliable block plantings for uniform ears and consistent market supply.
  • The 10000-seed packet is best for commercial growers, CSAs, or u-pick operations targeting extended harvest windows. Supports large-scale, succession-planted blocks for volume production and freezer-ready yields.
GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Sow Early Xtra Sweet SH2 Corn seeds outdoors after the last frost when soil temperatures reach at least 60°F (15°C). Plant seeds 1.5 inches deep and 12 inches apart in rows spaced 36 inches apart for optimal growth. Ensure the planting area receives full sun and is well-fertilized.

To germinate, keep the soil consistently moist. Corn is wind-pollinated, so plant in blocks of at least four rows to ensure good pollination. Once seedlings emerge, thin them to maintain 12-inch spacing. Harden off seedlings before transplanting if starting indoors.

Provide regular watering, especially during dry spells, and use a high-nitrogen fertilizer every 10 days. Be cautious with shallow cultivation to avoid damaging surface roots. Harvest when the silk turns brown and the kernels are plump. Enjoy fresh, or preserve by freezing for later use.
