With the right approach, you can harvest plenty for cooking and decorating—or even aim for the biggest pumpkin on the block.

Choosing Your Pumpkin Type

Not all pumpkins are the same. Smaller sugar pumpkins are perfect for baking, while medium carving pumpkins are grown for their sturdy shells and size. Giant pumpkin varieties, often from special Atlantic Giant genetics, are bred for size and can reach hundreds of pounds with proper care. Choose your variety based on your goal: eating, carving, or going big.

Where and How to Plant

Pumpkins thrive in full sun and need lots of space. Each plant can spread 10–20 feet, so give them room or direct vines to grow outward from the bed. Soil should be rich, fertile, and well-draining, loosened to at least 12 inches deep with compost mixed in.

Pumpkins are ready when their rinds are firm, fully colored, and resist puncture with a fingernail. Cut the stem with sharp pruners, leaving several inches attached to prolong storage life. Cure pumpkins in the sun for 7–10 days to harden the skin before storing in a cool, dry place.
